I'm REALLY late to the conversation but, here's the history. Brothers Ed (Richard Edgar) Freeman and Hod (Horace Cleveland) Freeman ran away from home in Davis Michigan as teenagers (motivated by a cruel stepmother) and settled in Tomahawk Wisconsin where they learned the trade of cobbling. They eventually started their own line of shoes. When the US entered WWI they tried to enlist in the military, but the government decided that the Freeman's could better serve the war effort by making boots for the soldiers. In the mid 1920's they moved their company down south to Beloit Wisconsin, presumably due to its proximity to Chicago and it's better location for shipping products. There they greatly expanded their production. In the early 1930's Hod was invited by the Chinese government to go teach them how to build an assembly line for shoe manufacturing. The brothers were innovative in their shoe designs and astute business men who stayed committed to making the finest product they could. Freeman shoes was by the late 40's one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the world, comparable only to Florsheim. The founding brothers died in 1947 & 1949.
The company at this point passed to their numerous children and the company was run by a board of directors. As the family expanded and moved on, the decision was made to sell them company in 1963.
