It's better than calf for winter weather, but it's suitable for all-year-round wear.

I wear shell all-year-round myself. However, some people say that if you are of the type whose feet tend to get warm and perspire a lot, then shell may not be for you.

I wear them year round. I'm wearing my wingtip pebble grain shell high boots today in the nasty sleet and snow.
