Hi reggin,

Out of curiosity, for what occasions do you intend to wear the clothing that it requires durability and which specific garments should be durable (shoes, pants, shirts)? That might help narrow down the recommendations and avoid anyone throwing in the one or other workwear company ;-)

Hi reggin,

I'm a big believer in quality over quantity. I like to dress more or less the same every day.
For casual I wear: classic DMs red, Chelsea boots; Jeans, only black right now but looking to but some levis 511 rock cod slim fit and some dark grey; shirts I've recently thrown out 90% of my t-shirts in a bid to age up and now i wear plain t-shirt or button-down casual shirts (ben sherman preferred brand); hoodies (zip up) are my preferred over shirt, I'd really like to find a durable hoodie brand, though in the past I've had pretty good luck with GAP; As for coats finding something that'll last is easy, I wear a Musto expedition coat right now and for the next few years.

I'd really like to find some durable hoodies, but it's not something I'd be comfortable buying online so really I'd need a brand that sells in the UK. I have easy access to London which is worth noting. Jumpers as well, I need some new Jumpers.

Pretty much every brand you find stocked at Self-Edge, Snake Oil Provisions, Superdenim, and similar stores will have great durability. Filson is also pretty well-regarded as a brand.

For Shetland jumpers (what we call sweaters in the US), I'd look into Harley, Howlin' By Morrison, Jamieson, and Drakes.

Personally, I also really like stuff from Stone Island, which I often find to be really well made.

Thanks, reggin, that helps!

Whilst I always wore Levis for many years, I've moved away from them because I find they have declined in quality (the pant legs tend to twist even on loose fitting jeans with the outer side seams moving to the front indicating poorly cut fabric). I've moved to Baldessarini jeans, which are very long living with a bit more elegant look... they just have one drawback that the darker ones bleed a lot especially in the beginning, but therefore don't fade as fast.

Regarding hoodies, Tommy Hilfiger has some nice ones that are pretty well made (the ones I have are still soft on the inside and kept their look despite many, many washings).

With regards to sweaters/jumpers, I love Arans and - if one can live with the slightly more boxy look and likes patterns - the hand-knit ones from Magee (Ireland, e.g. at www.thedonegalshop.com) at 250€ are a bargain for their quality (as are the other hand-loomed and machine knit sweaters from this shop, which I personally visited and can confirm). The hand-knits will last a lifetime with good care (and may be something one might not get anymore in a not too distant future considering hand knitting is a disappearing hobby)... no machine knit can compare in structure of the patterns and heft/weight of these sweaters. I would however recommend, if ordering online to share your measurements of a sweater that fits you well (especially sleeve length, chest width, sweater length) with the friendly staff as the hand knits don't conform to standard sizing due to the inevitable variance between knitters.

The polo shirts from both Ralph Lauren and Hackett are well made and last for ages, however I would recommend trying to find these at a reduced price (e.g. At Bicester Village) as retail prices are over what they are worth IMO.

Cafe Coton shirts (www.cafecoton.com) are great value for money and last very long, just in case you want another source in addition to Ben Sherman.

Thank you Anachronist for the recommendations! (And everyone else who replied to this thread)

Those Tommy hoodies look pretty sick, I especially like this one with the old German flag :rotflmao:

But it does look like an unusual fit so I'd have to try it on in person first.

As for jeans, I'm looking at Baldessarini's website, I don't know if they're a brand I'd go out of my way to find in England, but I'll add to my list of brands to check out, thanks very much.

Hi Reggin, check if there's a Baldessarini store in Bicester Village ... they have shops in all affiliated Village outlets in Germany and Netherlands... that might be worth a try to scout their fit and looks.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
