I miss the magic of restoring older cars.

Went to my first car auction today, just to get a feel for the pace of things. It's amazing how cheap some of these cars go. Everything is sold as seen, but if you have access to a decent mechanic then you can have quite a bargain.

Wow, that's the perfect farting car. I don't do cloth seats, but the resistance of leather seats don't time release properly. You get blasted. This should be patented.

That is why you get perforated leather with fans. They offer those in SAABs and now, I believe, teh KIA Optima.

My second E30 had perforated sport seats but didn't have a fan like teh SAAB.

Listen here NORE!!! I might be a newbie on this board but I've been on teh web since Compuserve and their numbered user name days. "teh" is my patented misspelling and everyone knows it. For the above post you owe me 4¢

BMW_E30_325i_Engine_Swap_V8_740i_0_resize.jpg

1989 BMW 325i

Location: Huntington Beach CA
VIN: WBAAA230XKAE71594
Chassis mileage: 250,000
Engine type: 4.0 BMW V8 m60 (from 740i) with 60,000 miles

How long have you had the car? The chassis started out as an automatic 325i bought from an enthusiast in San Diego 4 years ago.

Describe the body condition: Its your average daily driver. Paint is original (7 out of 10), there are small dings and dents. Like every other e30 on the planet, the front two fenders have dents in them. Its a full function over form car. Its the fast car you can daily driver and not need to worry.

Describe the mechanical condition: Car is being daily driven. Runs great. All maintenance was done on v8 before it was swapped into the e30. Some of the maintenance items that were done are; Oil pan gasket, water pump, thermostat, thottle body gasket, new ccv, intake manifold gasket, runner tubes under the manifold, new trans guibo, etc. Only minor issue is 4th gear syncro is weak.

Included documentation: Title, some receipts, and radio manual.

What makes this car special? Its simple really. Its the garagistic v8 test mule Lela. This car literally wrote the book on swap. Its the perfect receipt: V8 + 6 speed + 2800lbs. Car is a phenomenal experience on the track. With the 60mm brakes in the front and close to 300lbs of torque on tap. Its epic.

Asking Price: $10,000

+1 for the M3 LTW wheels
-5 if they are replicas
-10 because they are white

Fairly low miles 850i with stick. Even looks like all the pixels on the MID work.

I hope it had its motor replaced.  I believe the 850i had high rates of engine failure due to the Nikisil...Niki-something plating on the cylinder walls coming off

I think it was only the 3.0l and 4.0l V-8s which had the nikasil problem. The V12s had alusil.

Yeah auctions are the way to go, just get to know a small time dealer and let the guy / gal know what you want and agree on fee. Crazy cheap

e31 = moneypit

To some extent, I spent like 60% of what I paid on my 840 within a few months, but it wasn't the exact one I wanted. Just needed a car to start work and saw one that was pretty cheap. Previous owner didn't know what he was doing though. Was like a day from buying alpina rims and new seats when accident happened. Always driven a BMW and am driving e60 now so expect most of the costs going in.

Damn, seems pretty nice condition, but at price I'd rather get 850csi, not even sure I really want v12 neither as it doesn't really do much over v8. But then at that price I'd just get a lease return 640 that just came out for about the same price and wouldn't have to worry about fixing anything. Too many choices

My screen worked about 25% of the time, when it did it was crystal clear and the rest of the time I needed to put fingers on to read info.

Yeah not too concerned about that, if car is running fine now it shouldn't be an issue and if it does fail, well that's life

the e31 is one of those cars where on paper you think they make you look like a badass...

but the reality is that at this point they look incredibly dated and no one except BMW geeks know what this car is and you dont want to ******** with them anyway and now you have to find all these unobtainable parts with no payback I. sight...so you just say *******

Still one of my dream car. Just a very bad idea if you can't afford spending a lot of money in it.

I would love to be a good mechanic eventually and modify it how I think BMW should have made it (supercar instead of grand tourer, think M8 prototype).
