In Tokyo? It's possible but it would not be pleasant. Even a crappy one-room guesthouse the size of a closet with common facilities might set you back $550. There was one guy on the boards who bragged about sucking it up in such conditions while starving himself on instant noodles in order to be able to buy himself top of the line street fashions. However, even Tokyo was too much for him and he eventually had to make do with living in the decidedly unfashionable suburbs of Saitama.

If a person were to look, they could probably manage a 250 sf apartment in Tokyo Metro for about $650 w/private facilities and no key money, water included on a one year lease. Its small, but ****, you are in Tokyo. You have your own space to lay down and keep your stuff. Your own toilet, your own shower, and an electric burner and mini-fridge.

NYC....
unless you got a rent controlled or rent stablized apartment... its pretty much impossible... studio apts the size of some closets cost wayyyyy more than 1100...

if you rent something in the outer boroughs with roomies, you might be able to make it, if you buy food in bulk @ Costco, Jetro, or BJs...

cheapest rents would prolly be around east new york or canarsie... but dont flash anything valuable, ipod, iphone, etc... cuz your ass is gonna get robbed

If we are talking about central Tokyo, I think your estimate is too optimistic. Definitely in the range for a provincial city, suburb and maybe Osaka/Kobe. For the amount cited, you might get a 1 room flat as you described but with only around 140 square feet of space - or less if it's newer. The other problem is I found those examples on Japanese sites like minimini.jp (the English-language sites tend to have pricier examples) - to make sure they apply to you, you need to also have them check with the landlord whether foreigners are allowed or not.

Not an estimate. I actually looked. Do you consider Asakusa/Minowa/Minamisenju central Tokyo? There are several around there for the price range and square footage I mentioned. Places that cater to foreigners. Should be able to find something for around 60,000 yen. I did when I looked last night. from 180 sf - 250 sf.

Nice defence of your city W. Instead of insults, how about giving our OP a single good reason why Toronto should be considered? That there are Persians there doesn't count.

I've spent two weeks in Tortonto before. I enjoyed both of them. I also spent a week in Montreal, and I enjoyed it too. I didn't see that huge of a difference in the two cities. There certainly were differences in the two, but not so big of differences that they call for all the **** talking that goes on between the two on every thread about Canadian cities.

"As far as Montreal being the only city Canada has going for it, where the hell does that come from. What does Montreal, or Quebec for that matter, have that makes them so much better than the rest of the country?"

Answer: Culture

Everyone always says that Montreal has all this culture. What culture. Explain to me where the culture is in Montreal. I want some examples of it. I spent a couple of years living in Europe (Rome, Paris) and about three years living in NY and I would say those cities can really say they have culture to offer, but I have yet to see this culture that makes Montreal such a great city. Please, give me some examples (if you can) that make Montreal the cultural center of Canada, as its residents would have people believe.

I know you already know that chicago is possible but the two people waiting at the bus stop were talking about one of them making 11k in a year (It sounded like it may have been due to something like phd-candidacy rather than actually making THAT little) and it got me thinking about if I could do it.

It wouldn't be fun but I could stay in chicago on about that much money (if we bump it up to 1100 a month especially).

I currently rent and my share is under 500 (it may or may not go over that with utilities...not sure). I also know that I could cut this down further but thats either go to a shittier apartment (I rather like my current place) or a shittier neighborhood (not happening...hyde park is fine for me).

I'll assume that somehow my healthcare is covered (its still on my parents now...maybe my 1100/m job throws in benefits or the 1100/ms what I can do part time while doing full time grad school or something that lets my parents keep covering me).

Kwilk is right that CTA expenses will be about 90 (though at that point I would buy 30-day passes instead of using my chicago-card plus to pay each ride) and unfortunately I go to the only school that doesn't cover CTA costs. That being said, if I were trying to save money, I would bike to work far more often. I did it almost every day two summers ago (hyde park up to grand) but got lazy last summer even though I only had to go up to jackson (having to shower/change into nicer clothes at work made it harder). Doing that would cut most of the fees...maybe drop me to $20 a month on the CTA (weekends/inclement weather)

This would leave me with 580/m not related to housing/getting to work. My credit card bills tend to be around 500 (especially if you take out the CTA card refills and the parts of the utilities I have already counted) which covers food/entertainment/shopping. I've still got 80 left!

Well, I guess you do have a point there. Toronto does have Casa Loma afterall.

You might look into student co-op housing. At my university the coops included rent, utilities, internet, and all the food you could eat for about $500/mo total. Another plus was that there many international students, although the drawback was that there were many dirty hippies as well.

That's what paintball guns are for. There's a park in Montreal, that is full of dirty hippies. I believe I've tried to convince Manton to come up to Montreal a couple times for some sport shooting, but so far my offer has not been accepted.
