Of the dozens of things presented for your signature every day, how many do you actually thoroughly review? I'm finding I can't possibly read all this ****.

On a similar note, how many emails do you receive per hour?

If that's the case, perhaps you need to delegate more decision-making.

I receive 200+ emails/hr. But most are carefully filtered away

These days I don't have to worry about emails too much. My two assistants handle most of the heavy lifting in that area. If I need to address specific things I have them filtered through my assistants first so that they can present me an abstract of the issue. That way I can delegate and make decisions faster. It also helps to triage effectively.

An unsolicited update - I worked hard at delegating - setting ground rules and then just letting people get stuff done. Now I feel like I rarely do any actual work and spend most of my time doing public appearances, working the political process when I have to, and putting out the occasional fire. It's a funny balance.

Still get copied on way too many emails, but given that I work in government and have a certain type of workforce, I don't see that changing any time soon.

I make a fuss about my email in any job I work. I never have an auto sig because I don't want anyone contacting me by phone. I also insist on having my email like John Doe > [email protected]. That way when I sign up for anyone, I just a different name that starts with a J. If I get a call and someone asks for that different J name, I know it's because they sold my contact info or are using it themselves to sell me something, so I know to say he's not here and I don't have to talk to anyone.

So you are Marco Rubio. It all adds up.
