Try using a dry cast iron pan with a little salt sprinkled on it. Obviously, use less salt on the steak.

Let the steak come to room temperature..

Open all doors and windows around your stove-kitchen area, heat up until pan starts smoking, throw on a pan for 5 minutes or so. Flip. Another 5 mins on the pan. Remove and place on a warm plate and tightly cover with foil. Let sit for 10 mins or so.

Drink a cocktail and reflect on your day.

Sit down and eat your steak.

We also occupy top spots for "bicast leather", "how to grow sideburns" (and variations) and a couple other oddities.

Salt will keep the steak from sticking to the pan.

I don't use any oil when I toss a steak into a hot cast-iron pan, just salt in the pan. The steak is pretty ***** and it can cook in its own fat.

So you don't need to oil the steak or the pan, but you could. This thread is full of great ideas for how to cook a steak on the stove. All those marinades are worth trying.

Yes, the salt will help keep the steak from sticking. No oil is needed.

Unfortunately, student budgets don't allow me to enjoy as much steak as I'd like.

Alton Brown taught me how to cook. Try his rice in the oven method.

sticking is not a problem. in fact it's probably a good thing. steaks aren't scrambled eggs.

ideally, you should not even flip it more than once. also, don't move it while cooking

For someone who's first time it would be cooking a steak, does anyone have any pointers.

I have read this entire thread, but I had one question. Sometimes when you see people preparing steaks they cook them in the cast iron pan first and then put the pan into the oven? What does that do exactly, and should it be done?

Also...Supposedly worchestershire sauce makes hamburgers taste better; will it work on a steak?
