ClintonF - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I've recently ordered the raked buckle double monks you had MTO with AS. They are beautiful and classic so props to you ... the proximity of the buckles is to my mind more pleasing than the spacing on the JL Chapel. You used the 99 last but I have gone for the 48 'soft square' for a slightly more elongated look. But I'm not married to the idea and am concerned about the balance of the shoe. Any thoughts on what you might do differently? Single buckles instead of double, for example? or a different last?

Hiya, sorry for my tardy response. I've been giving your questions some thought. I will try and answer your questions as best as I can.

1. I look forward to seeing the double monks - I'm glad that I provided some inspiration to you.

2. The 99 Last is my best last and works for me. However, the AS48 is pretty similar in fit to the 99 last (so I've been told). So, you'll be fine with this choice.

3. The angle of the double monks for me are still something special to behold and I would recommend that you continue along this route. You will be able to get the "standard" double monks a little later down the line.

4. For reference, I've got orders for a pair of Standard double monks and a pair of "swept back" single monks.

I'm not sure when the single monks appeared. However, the double monks (in blue suede) turned up this morning.

To conclude, go for it. I'm confident that you'll be very pleased with the results.

You know I wouldn't be at all surprised if your raked tight-spread double buckle turns up as a new hand grade offering from AS. It deserves to, that sweep is something special - like the winged shoes of Mercury ?!. Thanks for your reassuring words, I've gone for a double sole with a medallion on the toe for a solid traditional look, but I don't expect those modifications will alter the elegance of the design. Will post pics for comparison in a few months .

Chay emailed this pic of my boots awaiting finishing:

Dainite soles for motorcycle commuting. I love the fit of the 87 and the 99 lasts, but am trying a handgrade on these. The plan is to wear these and see which is my favorite of all three, then to order a taller captoe balmoral boot.

lucky you - there are some of the nicest AS's i have seen, are they shell?

Nice shoes, but there's no way I'm paying 600 quid for a pair of shoes I haven't examined or tried on first. They probably need to be showcased in a high-end London shop or something.
