Hi! I am looking for a specific kind of shirt jacket. Not the typical workwear ones, but more of a "soft" look with collar roll and subtle stitching, preferrably in wool or cotton. Almost cardigan-like. See pictures below for the look I am after. Any brands you would recommend? The options I've found have either been MTM or very expensive. Would be great if they're easily available in the EU!

There's The Anthology's Lazyman and The Armoury's City Hunter.

On the more affordable and local side, there's Natalino's overshirts.

Private White V.C. I think have some very good options and they have their summer sale going on right now.

And just to note regarding the cotton overshirts by Natalino - they make anything that is knitted (or rather not a shirt) pill very much due to the fabric being abrasive. That said, I find them very well made.

I have a linen unconstructured jacket from Aspesi. They have frequent sales too. A nice casual jacket I like the fit. Can be a bit too casual depending what you're going for. They have other materials too.

100 Hands makes a very nice one (on left) but it definitely falls under the "very expensive" category, unfortunately.

Maybe Poszekta? Although it does lean slightly workwear

In 2022, at the headwaters of the workwear trend, I invested in a few Pal Zileri garments that veer away from the typical chore coat vibe and into a luxury overshirt or dress shacket. They look and feel more like a sports jacket, drape superbly, and offer incredible versatility in layering. And they have a snap front that heightens their aesthetic.

These pieces are unique, seasonal, and not cheap. But, as they say, you only live once.

Charles Tywitt Merino Blazer they are also calling a cardigan in the description £139 so that definitely drops into affordability. A good reliable company.

Fox Flannels offer a teba model they source from one of the famous Spanish makers. I had my shirtmaker copy and modify it, and now have three of hers.

I don't like this soft drape and figure I'd go for a dressier chore jacket if I wanted something like this. Even for unconstructed linen sport coats, I end up choosing a stiffer linen with more body than makes the jacket distinctly look like a jacket and not an overshirt.

Although expensive, I have and love the lej le cat posh plage jacket in linen. longer than some and a bit more jacket like but can still be worn as an overshirt. they also make in other materials, eyeing the wool herringbone for fall/winter. De Bonne Facture may have some you like as well.

Barena sometimes do nice hybrids - not sure what they describe them as today, but I've a boiled wool "blazer" from a few years back that is completely unstructured and wears more like a cardigan

Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Luxembourg, and while exploring the charming streets of the city center, I stumbled upon a hidden gem of a shop. As soon as I stepped inside, I was captivated by the array of stylish offerings, especially because living in Portugal has made it quite difficult for me to find my favorite brands.

While browsing through the collections, my eyes landed on a stunning dark-blue shirt-jacket made entirely of 100% cotton. It was truly love at first sight! What made this piece even more irresistible was that it was the very last one in the store, and it just happened to be in my size. To add to my delight, it was on a whopping 60% discount! Can you believe it?

This shirt-jacket has proven to be an essential addition to my wardrobe. Its very versatile; I find myself reaching for it, especially during my travels. Whether I’m out sightseeing or enjoying a casual dinner, it pairs effortlessly with jeans or pants. The breathable fabric keeps me comfortable, and the rich blue hue adds a sophisticated touch to my outfits.

Aren't these 'shackets'?
Either way, some of these look like the types of things you would see on a factory floor foreman in the 1970s, to me.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
