Ask A Question, Get An Answer... - Post All Quick Questions Here (Classic menswear)

Personally, I wear my chocolate suede chukkas (which are more dressy than something like Clark's) with suits on a fairly regular basis. Yes, it does dress down the suit and I wouldn't wear it when I needed to be at my most formal, but on an average day where I just need to be in coat and...

For someone with a modest income what clothing items should I spend a little extra on? Right now it

If it doesn't bust the budget, switch to shirts from Tyrwhitt (but never pay more than $40 a shirt from them- the MSRP is bull, they have constant sales), and for ties, go to discount stores- Marshalls/TJ Maxx gets Brooks Brothers and Polo stuff in for good prices on occasion, Nordstrom Rack has...

Shirt stays are the ones that go from your shirt to your sock. Traditional for military types, if I'm not mistaken. The ones with elastic around your calf are called sock garters. I have no personal experience with either, though seeing this conversation inspired me to order a pair of sock...

They sell welted shoes made from full grain leather for $200. Channeling is a mostly pointless aesthetic detail. So it's not done to the standards of Edward Green- what do you want from them?

Uh, that's just a channeled sole. The covering for most shallow channels like that one- which are pretty much purely aesthetic and don't affect wear- wears off pretty quickly with normal wear to the sole. It's normal and nothing to be upset about. You might not want to see it on a new shoe...

Donate/sell it along with the pants to somebody who can get some use out of the entire suit. Alternately, stick it in the back of your closet in case you lose the weight.

There are ways you can make them non-functional- but you can never close the buttonholes to move the buttons and adjust the sleeves, if that's what you're asking. No, but you can take in the chest of a suit (usually for a decent bit of money, though). Waist suppression reduces the size...

The alcohol would do two things- it would break down the finish, and it would remove oils from the leather. You're happy removing some finish for a worn look, but when you strip oils out of leather, that shortens its life. Lexol and mink oil will replace those oils, you should use one of...

What are you drinking right now?

I am drinking a most excellent hot cider. I took some of my hot buttered rum batter, melted it into cider, and added 2 oz of Old Overholt. It's a winner.

Pressing box pleast down entire length of shirt, or stop halfway or???

I iron around box pleats. If you do iron 'em, do it evenly. Personally, I like my shirts to flow smoothly with minimal or no creasing anywhere on the shirt, so I don't like to iron in hard creases like you would by ironing a pleat.

What are you drinking right now?

Huh, haven't seen the Stinger pop up in a while. Drinking a Cheerwine cocktail myself. 2 oz gin, 3/4 oz lime juice, rocks, and fill the highball glass with Cheerwine (an NC soda). Hopefully it's good luck for the Panthers game- all ya'lls NFL teams suck.

    Heavy smartphones and suits/sports jackets

You could try a leather holster clipped onto the back hip.

^Mid gray, yes. Dark gray and black, no. Black pants or suits require black shoes. You have some flexibility with grays, but those are not the most versatile shoes- to wear with charcoal, you'd need a substantially darker brown or a burgundy.

What are you drinking right now?

It's not exactly a drink that requires a lot of precision. I think you generally use about 2 parts gin to 1 part lemon juice. Just lightly muddle a crapload of basil, and dump it in a pitcher with the gin, lemon juice, and maybe half a part of 1:1 simple syrup (so 4 parts gin, 2 parts...

What are you drinking right now?

Since when does Sailor Jerry come in a sleeve? Anyway, Project Paso Cab right now, likely a hot buttered rum next. I've really been enjoying those this fall already- I just made a big batch of the batter (recipe I used has 2 cups brown sugar and a stick of butter blended with spices...

^I personally like the first one the best, but all three would work. I'd skip the scarf/ascot whatever that is. In terms of pairings, navy suit and white shirt means wear any tie that you like. It's one of the most neutral combinations possible- the only thing more neutral is a charcoal suit...

    Things you just don't get

I don't get the whole "everybody is beautiful" validation thing. It's untrue. We're evolutionary programmed to respond to certain things, and while there are some variations in how we react, some people are indeed more physically attractive than others. The thing to teach kids is not that...
