    Carpal Tunnel Experiences?

Well, you should hope it's something physical that can be fixed. I've had ten years of pain from a period of excess computer use which, so far as my neurologist could work out, was induced by extreme stress. No physically-detectable signs at all. Luckily, it's nowhere near as bad as it was -...

    Corked Wiskey

Do you have a reference for this? The article above lists under 'Dissenting opinions', but google doesn't throw anything else up (other than this thread!) I'm happy to believe the TCA, of course.

The cork's been touching the liquid anyway, if the bottle's been on its side. If alcohol "dissolved" cork, we wouldn't use it to close bottles.

First trip to London - Hotel and Restaurant Recommendations?

Excuse my stuck record, but go to St John's (whichever branch). And, for getting out..... Paris is only being two-and-a-quarter hours away on the train, no excuse really. Practically a day trip. Scotland on the sleeper train? The Lake District? Anywhere in Europe is a cheap flight away...

What are you drinking right now?

Made what I suppose is a cocktail. Don't know anything about them, don't drink them, but thought I'd give it a go. 4 parts Dark Rum 1 part juice of a lime teaspoon sugar 1 part tap water Made up in one glass (to dissolve sugar), then poured over lots of ice in a tumbler. Tastes all right...

    Houses with 'No Shoe' Rules

Strangely, not all the people who live with me want to see me naked. Odd, that.

    Houses with 'No Shoe' Rules

No, what's weird is taking a pile of clothes into the bathroom, taking bedclothes (if any) off and showering, drying, putting on the clothes whilst in the bathroom, traipsing back to the bedroom with the pile of bedclothes in hand. What a palaver. I sleep naked anyway. On the shoes-off...

PSA: Sunspel up to 70% off

And again. 60% off. I've sworn off clothing purchases, though. The T shirts and polos I bought last time still look almost like new. Great quality.

    Shoes With Character

who did your resole? nice job Timpsons, which is the biggest (maybe the monopoly?) chain services (shoes, keycutting etc.) shop in the UK. One in every town. Obviously some variation in quality of work, but it's directly managed not franchised, and they're pretty good. 65 quid for JR Sole &...

    The Official Wine Thread

Just picked up a random 1986 Mosel Kabinett from the local merchants for 10 quid. The cork was so loose that it was virtually floating, and touching it with the corkscrew pushed it in. Slightly dried out, but still alive, and a bargain.

Cheaney suede brogues, about 5 years old, after second resole. Just brushed, and excess nap burned off with a lighter. Never used a suede cleaner on them.

    Visiting London May 4th-9th

I suppose I'll tack onto this thread as I'm planning a London trip for next week. Do you locals recommend getting a reservation for St. John Bar and Restaurant? I'm thinking of a meal there (most likely lunch) and I don't mind sitting at the bar. Both incarnations of St John's are excellent...

    family traditions and culture

I'm not sure you have to be so calculating (that's a pejorative word, but I can't think of a neutral one). My father was strong and (mostly) silent, and I learnt by following him, not by listening to him tell me what to do. I'd also add that strong influences outside the family are good, for...

PSA: Sunspel up to 70% off

Ends tomorrow. Plenty of stuff left. I bought a navy T, and black and navy polos. RRP £150, Cost £39. I think this level of sale might only happen once a year - sadly I can't afford their stuff normally.

How to tell someone they are not welcome in my home alone

Nothing wrong with it, it's what it says about you. Let's say you keep a neat house. No smoking, wipe feet, use coasters, etc. But then you have people over. All that anal crap goes out the window. Clean up and air the place out after. They're your friends not your kids. If the surface needs a...
