Question Regarding Brooks Brothers Return Policy

I have about 14 unworn BB shirts bought over the last two-three years which still are folded with price tags, some still in the plastic...I actually have a few others which I've worn and discovered they are tents, something I didn't notice in the store - mea cupla. I'd like to return the 14...

Shirt Alterations Shop in East 20s of Manhattan...

I went to Shirtmaven's shop yesterday - He's a very nice man to work with, and it's a much nicer and more organized shop than Allmeier, fwtw. I am weeding through the cheaper shirts I own, and getting the halfway passable things altered....I went through my Brooks Brothers shirts last...

Shirt Alterations Shop in East 20s of Manhattan...

btw, here are the brands of shirts I have, in approx. order of nicety - would you skip alterations on any of these brands as a bad investment of $15-20? Charles Tyrwhitt Brooks Brothers Henry Jacobson Ike Behar Lamberti Tasso Elba Alfani Hathaway Joseph Abboud Kenneth Cole Calvin Klein...

Shirt Alterations Shop in East 20s of Manhattan...

I just popped in there today. They seemed real nice and I may bring them a few old shirts to try slimming the sides. They said $12.50 for darts, $15 to take in the sides, $20 if the arms needed re-setting.

Taking in sides of Leather Pea coat?

Thanks so, would you look for a leather place (cobbler, bag repair, etc) or just a place that does alterations, but hopefully is good with leather? And if the latter, is that just a word of mouth thing or is there some way to know if they are good?

Taking in sides of Leather Pea coat?

I have a Schott leather pea coat, black "Naked cowhide", model 140. I love the basic rugged workmanship and the leather quality. But it has a very boxy, square line look - I prefer the tapered, narrow waisted silhouette of the old WWII USN Kersey pea coats. Assuming I bring the old wool coat and...

    Taking in big shirts

Poor man's Paint illustration: cool - Thanks! - I'm going to print this page out and bring to my tailor - I like the "is that too tight ?"gauge

    Taking in big shirts

Yes -- it can be raised. Very easy to do while you're taking in the sides. I'm assuming they use part of the sleeve to "build" up the lower part of the armhole space?

    Taking in big shirts

wow - i went through half my dress shirts last night - the cheaper half (I have about 40-50; I bought about half of them very cheap brands when I first graduated a few years ago and needed a work wardrobe fast - the other half are Brooks Bros, Tyrwhitt, etc, bought here and there over the last...

    Taking in big shirts

You can contact SF member Shirtmaven. Here is his website. Cool - thanks so much. I'll def. look into salvaging my present shirts - just not all of them...

    Taking in big shirts

Thanks guys...donate is how I'm leaning for this first batch (I have the biggest ones up for grabs first). If my other smaller (and better quality) shirts just need a tweak at the sides I'm gonna take them to my local cleaner's - less dear ones first, as a test bed, of course. Def. Going with...

Absolutely. And btw, that is why I never get things in Manhattan, unless absolutely necessary!

    Taking in big shirts

Gads, my place slims both arms and sides for less than $20. Are you sure they're not quoting you prices for separate alterations? If they're doing both at once, it shouldn't be $50. fwiw, I've gotten quotes for simple things (hemming pants, etc) in manhattan that were double what is charged in...

    Taking in big shirts

A cleaner that also does alterations should be able to carry outthis relatively simple process, however it is still a good idea to do a test run with a shirt you would not regret losing if the results are poor. This is sound advice; thank you to everyone for your input. I may try to take some...

    Taking in big shirts

assuming I have a lot of shirts and most are lower-priced, would you trust this alteration to a dry cleaner shop (as opposed to a shirt or suit maker?)

    Taking in big shirts

I have several shirts that are way too voluminous in the torso and upper arm area. This is probably because I need a 17 neck; the shirts are usually sized like an XL and have 48-52" chests (I am stocky but only about a 44 chest, 37" waist, and am trying to lose more weight) I realize...

    Fighting while wearing Nice Clothes

There's a great fight scene in The Manchurian Candidate, following which you see Frank Sinatra's suit looks like it was attacked by a pack of hungry wolves....

is it worth altering a cheap suit?

Speaking as one who has had nice suits and cheap suits altered, I'd say limit spending accordingly - in other words, maybe stay under $50 for tweaks to a really bad suit (sleeve and trouser length, make it presentable, etc), $100 for a so-so, $125 for a decent suit and so forth. Although I am...

Is this Oxxford suit worth altering?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the brutal honesty - I need that a lot more than the usual - "oh, it's not so bad" stuff. I know I need to get all the way down to 150 or so before I'll look right in a suit. I imagine my others will look too baggy as well by then....I'll need to have a fire sale. Of...
