I am on the slimmer side of your standard 40R. I find that RRL shirts fit me better in a medium. For this particular sweater, though, I felt like a large fit me better. I think the large has a better length for me (I'm 5' 11"), and I did not mind the added drape that comes from sizing up...- Spills
