A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

According to Put This On, yes: Traditionally, Englishmen wore these ties with the stripes sloping down from left to right, while Americans went the other direction. The style originated in the early 20th century, when decommissioned British officers continued to wear their regimental...

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

Just to clarify, I was speaking solely about striped ties in the U.S., where, as Academic2 said, they're just seen as another item of apparel these days (with perhaps a few exceptions). It's not possible to have hand-rolled edges on a self tipped tie; it must be untipped for rolled edges.

HOF: What Are You Wearing Right Now - Part IV (starting May 2014)

Sure, sloped shoulders are an anatomical feature and they "are they they are." But I'm referring more specifically to how the structure of a jacket's shoulders enhance or hide this trait. In some of Claghorn's fits, his shoulders appear very sloped. In others, he appears to have a more normal...

HOF: What Are You Wearing Right Now - Part IV (starting May 2014)

^ It's a pretty decent fit, no doubt, but to get picky, there are some things that look off to my eye. Firstly, there is the case of Claghorn's oddly sloped shoulders in some of his pics; they are present in this one. Is it a result of bad posture due to poor muscle tone of the back...

Patinating RM Williams Boots At Home

Hmm. Today I learned a new verb: "patinating." Me thinks the patina process is best left to occur naturally, however. No need to take pantyhose and sandpaper to your new pair of shoes/boots. :uhoh:

The KNIT or GRENADINE NECKTIE Friday Challenge 20th June 2014

Fair enough, and I acknowledge the difference. I wasn't necessarily directing my comments at you, just getting my thoughts out there. But let me ask you this hypothetical question: Assume all elements are as casual as can be. Completely unstructured sport coat in a light color with a...

The KNIT or GRENADINE NECKTIE Friday Challenge 20th June 2014

Agree with this. Although I usually prefer a spread collar with a suit/tie, it is ridiculous to say that a BD collar is never okay with a tie. In fact, given a casual tie, such as a knit, and an equally casual jacket, I'd argue that a BD collar is preferable, and I'm sure many here would...

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

Hehe. Not trying to knock you. I appreciate the pics! :) I don't have nearly that many striped ties myself, otherwise I'd offer some pics, too... all lined-up and pretty...

Btw, jrd: how long did it take you to arrange all your ties like that for the pics? OCD much??

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

Well, yeah, like jrd and I already expressed, a navy ground striped tie would be a good place to start. But you can't really get any more specific than that, and the same can be said for almost any tie; navy ties are among the most versatile, be it a solid, neat, striped, what have you. But...

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

I already stated my favorite striped tie: navy w/ white double bar stripes in shantung fabric. It is the striped version of a navy w/ white dots tie, in my mind. However, I won't go so far as to say every gentleman should own one. I don't think there is any single particular striped tie...

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

^ I see what you're saying. For me, it is interesting to learn the origin of certain striped designs, but it's after the fact, has no meaning to me, and thus no influence on whether or not I purchase a tie. I judge on aesthetic appeal only, like you, jrd; we are in agreement.

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

^ Interesting. I don't really care about the historical origins of certain regimental stripes, though. They're essentially irrelevant these days, and I'm actually surprised that a design as classic and simple as the navy/white double bar is claimed by an organization. Usually true "regiment"...

Not bad, but I wouldn't buy either. If you like 'em though, go for it.

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

Yep, that's the one I was referring to. One of the most beautiful ties I've ever seen. Simple in pattern, interesting in texture, incredibly versatile and classic. I'm holding out for the 9 cm version.

No worries. :) Somewhat relevant to this thread: (start at the bottom) http://putthison.com/tagged/The-Necktie-Series ^ An awesome write-up by my favorite menswear blog on almost everything you need to know about ties.

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

Hmm, "solid striped" seams like another contradiction to me, lol. :p "Reppe stripe" is probably the term you're looking for, like jrd said. Reppe silk has a diagonal, twill texture to the weave, but this texture is usually much less obvious than grenadine.

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

There are certain striped ties with three colors that work--the Hober SF club tie being one of them--but for the most part, the striped ties I gravitate toward are the simplest ones with only two colors. Never, ever more than three, though, like jrd suggests.

A Study in Stripes: Regimental and Repp Ties

"Neat striped" ties? That's something of a contradiction. There's no such thing as a "neat striped" tie. "Neat" refers to a tie with small, repeating patterns, so a neat can't be a striped tie. But judging by the context of your post, I think you're just using the term to mean a...
