    How big are SFers?

5'6", 138lbs. Just benched 245lbs the other day and threw up 3 bench press reps with 90lb dumbbells. Going heavy really does a number on my 45 year old joints though.. going to back off to the 75 and 80lb dumbbells and increase the reps. Much easier on the joints that way... :)

Suggestions for 'Thank you' gift for Coaches

Gift certificate to an online athletic gear store is going to be a winning proposition. Easy to do over the web.

Can I Get In Decent Shape WITHOUT...

Use dumbbells. But be careful. DBs are a double edged sword. On the one hand, they are harder to stabilize and do which is why 2XDB is usually less than BP weight, and that's good because it develops the muscles that stabilize the weight as well. But you can also hurt yourself with...

    No calorie noodles. Shirataki

 Yeah, it was brutal. But my sig sums up my mental approach when I did UD2.0 as a vegetarian.

    No calorie noodles. Shirataki

Yeah, give it a shot. If you are already under 10, it should get you in the 7-8% range with no problems. You'll be totally ripped... :slayer: Can you describe your modified RFL if you don't mind? As a vegetarian, it is a struggle for me to do any of these diets, since there is no...

    No calorie noodles. Shirataki

UD2.0 was great. Very effective at getting me from about 13-14% to probably a shade under 10%. I did 2 rounds of about 6 weeks each. It is a hard diet to follow but very very effective. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are under 15% or so. If you are higher, try RFL. It is...

    No calorie noodles. Shirataki

Good **** if you are on a low carb diet. I used to eat a lot of it when I was doing UD2.0. It tastes like whatever it is cooked in, but the texture was like rubber.

    Random health and exercise thoughts

Done with strength/hypertrophy training for a bit...gettin a little too beefy for my frame, especially in the leg area. Gonna focus on athleticism a bit more and maybe do a slight cut; I downloaded enter the kb and infinite intensity. Not sure which will be better for my goals. Any suggestions...

i have a few months off to prepare for my next job in another country and i want to

If I was independently wealthy (which is the closest approximation to your current status that I can think of), the last thing I would consider is spending all day in the gym. Get a mountain bike and explore every trail within a couple of hours driving distance. Get a backpack and go on day...

Lifts that I can do with a strained shoulder

All pulling motion exercises should be fine. I would be careful with push exercises. They always end up involving the shoulder girdle and depending on how bad your shoulder is, you may want to be a bit careful. And of course legs.

recs for good gloves for lifting weights

A stitch in time saves nine. You need to take care of your calluses before they rip like that. Beastskills.com has a nice tutorial on how to take care of calluses before they rip. You don't need gloves if you take care of your hands.

    Tabata intervals

I don't like the idea of tabatas with weights because of the potential for injury. With tabatas, you are expected to go all out for 20 seconds. I can't see how you can do that without at least some loss of form by sets 6-8. And handling heavy weights with questionable form is a recipe for...

    Athletic Fatigue aka "The Bonk"

Other than the obvious nutritional stuff, get your blood checked. My mother had a similar episode about 25 years ago when we were on a hike. Turns out that it was one of the first symptoms of her diabetes. She has been living with it ever since.

    Random health and exercise thoughts

I like my sports specialist - a lot. I had this recurring back pain, nothing debilitating but still annoying and my regular doctor had thought it was a bulging disk. However, the sports specialist did a full suite of tests - x-rays and all and the good news is that my vertebrae and disks are...

    Random health and exercise thoughts

I do essentially an inverted pyramid except for the 1st heavy set. For example, for DB BP, I typically go 85, 90, 85, 85, 80 or something like that, targeting 8ish reps for the 1st set and 5 reps for the rest.

    Random health and exercise thoughts

For BP, I start with 5 min of rotator cuff exercises and then 2 warmup sets. Then do 4 hard sets.

    Random health and exercise thoughts

I think I'm gonna start doing some core work. I don't know how hard deadlifts and front squats are really hitting my abs so I think I need some isolation work. Any recommendations? I dont feel like doing 100s of crunchs and leg lifts. I would recommend a circuit of the following, done without...

    Random health and exercise thoughts

When's your carb-up - thursday or friday? I always found it pretty weird to split thursday in 'half'. No carb up to PWO and then all hell broke loose. Might have to jump on the diet myself pretty soon. There's a UD2.0 variant in the book for people who don't like the split Thursdays. I myself...

What is the Single Best Upper Body Exercise?

Hard to pick one. Kinda like asking which is the best tool - the screw driver, the drill or the hammer. Each one has its specific use. But if you want to pick a couple, I would pick the pushup and the pullup. The pushup has endless variations - wide, diamond, lalanne, feet up, pike, tiger...
