I did ask the associate to take a look. The pair of burgundy cliftons came from the associates store. The Elgin's came from the warehouse - who apparently told the associate 'they looked good'.- mavrik13

Received my seconds 2/250 on Friday, just had a chance to open them today. The Burgundy Cliftons are excellent - a couple minor imperfections making them seconds, but certainly worth keeping. I have a black delray from back when they were selling them (seconds) for $129. Great, versatile shoe. Wish mine were brown instead of black - I'd wear them a lot more. Hard to go wrong at that price!- mavrik13

Certainly looks fine for a pair of second quality shoes. I have a similar pair of Walnut Sanfords with some of the same streaking over the toe. I have gotten used to it, it adds a little bit of character, and you can't really notice from eye level. It is tough buying seconds from AE here in...- mavrik13

If anyone was wondering the same thing as me. Independence shoes are not part of the 2 for $250. Not terribly surprising I guess.
