Not at all Munky, you're a great chap. It wouldn't be fair or accurate to consider myself an expert. Let's hope we keep the craft going. Merry Christmas everyone.

I don't know about very much these days, I think I am too old... In another life I worked in the world of handmade shoes and the leather industry for 40 years, following in the footsteps of both my father & grandfather. Northampton men through & through. It's the one thing we can't...

The best brushes for fine leather shoes are horsehair and never scratch the leather. The very best brushes are actually over stuffed and will for the first dozen or so times actually lose hair. The exception are boar or pig bristle brushes, the quality ones never lose hair, however whilst...

Edwards of Manchester shoe shop - awful service

I too belong to this club and certainly don't look like a typical student. Needless to say there are more than just a few of us, hence Edwards no longer exists. They went bust 6 months ago!

Ask a specific question Patrick if you want a specific answer, otherwise I'm entitled to post generalisations and puns (as bad as they might be) as the next man.

I know several, but I doubt they would be keen to post here and suffer the harassment and mockery others with expertise have had to bear.

It might be flippant but it's true. A chemist is better qualified than lay people to determine which ingredients to use in a given product, no?

But we now have so many eminent chemists why don't we ask them to explain the pros and cons of different compounds? Excusing the pun but this thread was awash with them last week. :smarmy:

Thanks I now understand your point. As a layman I guess it means they add the silicone to help with spreadability. If any bick rep says bick4 doesn't contain silicones, in light of this new information, at least they are only being hypocritical less than 1% of the time.

To be honest any simple moisturising cream will do. Nivea is just a recognisable brand and product, but I must say I have not looked into its ingredients for many years. For all I know it could be full of silicones and parabens.

**The Official Shoe Care Thread: Tutorials, Photos, etc.**

I think that's a very sensible and reasonable view. There is more than just mere opinion in the world of leather care and a lot of it has been agreed upon for decades by those who work in the field. There may be nuanced differences and some may favour one technique over another, but all...

Not from my end. Any discussion about silicone in polishes is germane to this thread.

Simple version: Silicone containing products allegedly seal the leather, not allowing it to breath, be conditioned, contributing to drying out and eventually cracking. Forgive me for saying this but just a couple of posts ago you were a phd chemist extradonaire with 20 years professional...
