The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 2018-)

Nat, check these out. Cabs are 3' x 4'. I'm not sure what's inside. Just got them home and hooked them up.

The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 2018-)

We've been locked down in Ontario for a bit, and the thrift store game is dead and buried. Not a lot going on out there, but if you work twice as hard as before, you can still find 1/10 the stuff. Being forced to learn about new segments of the market hasn't been a bad experience, though...

Buying and Selling on eBay: Tips, Tricks, Problems & Questions

Some great eBay negotiating: Message 1 from buyer: "Tell me when you drop the price to $150 with free shipping." (Item is $249.) OK. Typical fishing expedition. No big deal. I wasn't dropping the price, so I ignored it. Message 2 from buyer: "Hey man. I said I'd buy this for $150 with free...

They're RCMP high browns. A nice pair, too.

Buying and Selling on eBay: Tips, Tricks, Problems & Questions

What do you guys make of this? There's a seller on eBay who lists outrageously poor fakes by some of the best-collected artists of the 20th century. It probably takes him 10 minutes to knock off a ****** paint smear in his garage. He lists these things as authentic with some bullshit provenance...

Dacks and other Canadian shoe brands

Picked these up yesterday. I'd avoided thrift stores for the last few months just because they were so awful in the spring. But might have to check them out more frequently now:

We have a ton of vinyl guys in the thread. I have two 5' Smiths promo posters on the walls of my living room. If you ever find a vinyl score, you're guaranteed to make money just by buying and flipping here. This is Rule 1 of thrifting: If you ever see a record collection hit the floor in a...

The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 2018-)

I haven't ever found an antiquarian book at a thrift store. And I've tried for years to build such a library. Thrifting is a regional activity. I can imagine that someone living near Cambridge might thrift books regularly. Someone in Detroit might thrift soul records. But the answer to the...

Didn't thrift the Olsen. Picked it up on FB Marketplace a few week ago. You probably saw the listing. What did you sell yours for? I find with the more expensive stuff it's a hard sell unless you bought it so cheap that you can let a dealer have it at a price where they'll make money.

I got the Huber set back from the upholsterer. The couch and chair were free courtesy of a couple of guys moving out of a rental at Queen's. I picked up this chair at that junkyard for around $5. Also back from the upholsterer: Same story with this MCM bench:

Pretty sure these are tourist-trade pieces. Not the ceremonial blankets that bring the big money. The condition looks a bit rough. I'm sure they were cheap enough that it didn't hurt to take a chance.

Hans Hofmann-influenced amateur piece. I like the colours too. Probably mid-century.

I went back to the junkyard yesterday. It was another nice day; no point staying inside. I found some interesting mid-century lighting. Swag x2 Very Large Schoolhouse UFO

The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 2018-)

I went to a junkyard yesterday. It was a beautiful day, and I'd driven past this place dozens of times. Figured I'd take a drive into the country and dig around. The place was enormous, with 20 years of salvaged stuff piled into 50+ trailers, roached out buses, campers, sheds, etc. Pics are bad...

Stripping and re-staining most stuff isn't worth it. You'll just ruin the piece. I've seen exceptions. Sometimes someone will paint a piece of furniture. If it's a simple enough job to strip and sand it, then go ahead. Small coffee tables are easy to strip and stain. Chairs are not. Also worth...

The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 2018-)

Got up this morning and decided to sand and oil my MCM finds of the last week. Pics are **** because I've resisted buying any Apple products. I think I'm gonna write about this later, but since courts went virtual in March I've been able to do two jobs at once. It's been a lot of fun. (I didn't...
