    Share some SF History

yup, this is my vintage too. I know we do a halcyon days of yore thing every once in a while, but to me anyway, that was SF at its finest... the best litmus test of this revolves around someone who, in due course, I've met and come to consider a friend.... Litmus test: Kent Wang is: 1. respected...

    Game of Thrones

Read LoTR if you want mind numbing descriptions of scenery and rote fantasy crap. How can you call the original "rote fantasy crap"? Maybe everything that followed is "rote fantasy crap" but the the original is the original.

    RIP: Laurent Fignon

R.I.P., the man had panache, I am sure he faced cancer with the same spirit he raced his bike. (As an aside I hate when people refer to the passing of people who had cancer as "losing their fight with cancer" as Hinault did. This to me implies if the person had just fought harder or...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

Because Rachel Ray makes them look fun, that's why. That, in a nutshell, is why we have a Wusthoff santoku in the knife box. I hadn't thought about in quite this way before but maybe lots people find that snub-nosed look santokus have to be cute and non-threatening, kind of like Rachel Ray.

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

There isn't a lot of hate for them. Personally, I think they are pretty useless. I can't think of any time where they are the best tool for the job. That's just me, judging by how well they sell. To me they are a jack-of-all-trades master-of-none type of knife. Not long enough to be as useful...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

I can get a very good edge with the Spyderco Sharpmaker, but I always finish up a knife on 1500 grit and then 2000 grit sand paper (then if I am feeling really anal I will do a few strokes on some .5 micron mylar lapping sheets I have). The Sharpmaker takes me close enough and the sandpaper...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

I'm thinking I might order a spyderco sharpmaker...any reason not to do this for ~$40? I have used them before... they seem to work fine and I currently do not have anything for sharpening (and its now been like 12mo since my knives have seen a stone). I really like my Sharpmaker, it is one easy...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

Construction. Quality of materials. Ability of blade to get sharp and stay very sharp. Lightness/comfortability in my hands. IMO, knives are a much more personal, individual experience than they are a "everyone should buy XXXXXX brand" kind of thing. Kwilk, Do you sharpen your knives or send...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

Interesting, they also produce a "powdered" effect on the main body of the blade which I assume is just for show, as it stops short of the actual edge. Ya, the texture on the upper part of the blade is just for show. The best knife steel comes from Japan, Sweden and the U.S. and they all have...

RE: Best Quality vs. Value Chef Knife

The Elite is billed as "powdered"; no idea what that means or if it is just aesthetic. Powdered steel (where the steel is made into a fine powder before rolling or forging) is supposed to have a finer grain structure (which should lead to a finer and more polished edge if sharpened correctly).

    2010 Tour de France Thread

Lemond was a great TdF rider...probably the last one. - B What makes his wins so impressive to me is that he either won against his teams wishes ('86) or without any ('89) or much team help ('90).

Are you alleging Lance was riding against George in the Hell of the North? Huh. I don't remember the Rogers. Hey, you have a viewpoint and nothing anyone here says will change it. I can think of better things to argue about. /shrug +1
