Unfunded Liabilities: a/k/a The Cloth Thread

Singapore climate is pretty tough on clothes, I agree! It depends on how formal your dress code is for work I guess, but linen trousers are about as comfortable as you will find. It wrinkles a bit and you would probably be advised to hand-wash them to preserve the waistband , which is not very...

Hello Mr Jogesh, I have a large inventory of premium English-made woollen textiles that I would like to monetise; I am tired of them being Unfunded Liabilities and would like to really put them to work for me. Are you amenable to a bond issue backed by these assets? Given that they are made from...

It won't be due to a "problem" with the yarn, it is an issue of consumers demanding something from this artisanal supply chain that it was never meant to deliver. It's from the same sheep, raised much the same way as 60-70 years ago, the wool is processed into top pretty much the same way as...

In an ideal world, the suit would have 3 season usability (Autumn, Winter, Spring). I live in Tokyo, Japan, where between July and September, the weather is too hot and humid for me to wear a suit of any kind. Winters being generally speaking fairly mild here, I'd chuck a jumper or sweater...

A canvassed jacket, made of wool, linen or cotton, must be treated the same; you can't abuse them as the canvas interlining and shoulder pads may become badly creased or damaged. You can pack such a jacket in a garment bag or ordinary suitcase, gently folded, pretty well. If you want something...

If you want razor-sharp creases in cotton trousers, you can do as we did in the Army in the 1980's and send them to the laundry for a heavy starch treatment. Then, they don't breath so well, which negates a key feature of cotton.

Traditionally for winter riding breeches. If outdoors in cold windy conditions, it is brilliant; hardwearing, and resistant to wind and light rain. Not ideal for town use if you are in and out of heated premises all day.

Dugdale have a good range in their Invincible book, from 480-600g. H.E. Box have 990g Cavalry Twills, and Farnhill & Hirst have a version at 1000g.

That looks great, and would also make a great suit for informal city wear in winter, well done.

A couple of other options; Farnhill and Hearst 400 range, and Andrew Elliot Shetlands (3 colour choices)

You can get cavalry twills up to 32 oz from several of the merchants. Obviously winter wear, and riding breeches would have been the original purpose.

You can procure tweeds in this pattern from Harrisons' Porter and Harding Hartwist book, Lovat Mill's Ettrick book, Huddersfield Fine Worsted's Alsport II book, Glenlyon Tweed Mill's 775g range, and from Islay Woollen Mill's K range.

"Coarseness" is relative. Until the 1930's, when fine-wool producing nations like Australia, Argentina and South Africa started to seriously respond to market demand with fleeces consistently less than 21 micron in diameter, the softest and coolest worsted fabric that could be procured was Super...
