So my foot got run over by a car today in Rome, I have a broken big toe. Could have been worse. Anyway the doctor told me I should wear open-toed shoes for 6 weeks. He recommended Birkenstocks..not exactly my style. Any good ideas? I live in the center of Rome, I can't walk around in flip flops, the streets are too filthy and they give no support.

I feel your pain having to traverse cobblestones with a broken toe.
Off the top of my head what about leather slides with a decent sole?
Or you could always pick up a pair of Supergas and take a pair of scissors to the affected toe area.

I recommend you just bite the bullet and get a post surgical boot that is open in the front. They Velcro close and the sole is sufficiently thick to support the entire foot as it heals. In short, get something that does the job you need rather than trying to modify shoes that are not made for the job.

That’s a good idea. Maybe better to go full “medical” look. Better than looking like a hippie in Birks.

Get better soon! Sorry to hear about your accident but happy to hear that you were not more seriously hurt.
