Around $425. That's about what the lace-to-toe standard HotShots go for, so it was about what I expected since that is what I'd be basing a custom order on.

I have to say, the deciding factor for me will probably come down to the welt. The materials used by the standard "big names" mentioned here at Styleforum are all from most of the same suppliers and same quality. I just really love the look of the White's rolled Norwegian welt (or whatever the actual name of it is, I know it's been discussed many times). I think Nick's does a similar welt on some models, and if they will do it on a custom build, I will definitely give Nick's a shot since I don't own anything from them yet.

So, if VermilyeaPelle is reading this, and can come up with a 6" lace-to-toe HotShot with Tan Teton leather and rolled Norwegian welt, he can probably make at least one sale.

PS - I forgot to add, the leather on the boot at the link I posted is both standard smooth side out and rough out of the Tan Teton.

So very true. As if I needed anymore natural CXL (or, in this case, chrome mexcel), I'm pretty certainly I'll be buying a pair of Nick's in this leather at some point.

The Burgundy Anaflex was really cool, too. Almost black, but any stretch/stress area (that shows the pull-up characteristics) is a beautiful burgundy, and it has an awesome luster.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. The contrast between the dark and light areas seemed more extreme than anything I've seen in natural CXL.

Don't you already own Wescos and White's? Seems the choice is simple to me. I love my White's, but I still want to see how Nick's compares, especially given how similar they are.

Good point! Needing a lighter colored brown... Hmm. Something with good pull-up properties. Natty cxl is ****, but am more of a fan of mocha or olive cxl colors overall

I wouldn't hold it against you if you went for the olive version that I posted in the OP. Light(ish) color, but nice and unique.

Where on the website is everyone seeing these styles? Contender? Weekender? It seems like there is not easy way to know what Nick's offers...

And THAT my friend, is why I ended up going with a pair of White's when I first started looking for a decent pair of boots. I am hoping this thread gives more exposure to Nick's, because I think they make a quality boot, but it is hard to find out info on them. I am about 95% sure my next pair of boots will be from Nick's.

Here is a drawing: Nick's Welted (left) and White's (right). Nick's Welted uses a wider rolled welt, so they have clearer double bottom stitching.

Nick's Contender doesn't have a rolled welt and uses McKay instead of nails. "Contender" is impressed on a shaft or a sock lining, afaik.

THANK YOU!!!!! That is exactly the type of info I have been looking for!!!

I emailed Kyle at Baker's and I am going to go with a pair of Nick's for my next boots.

Anyone know how sizing compares to White's? From what I've read, the sizes are pretty consistent so if I take a 9.5D in White's, I would probably take the same in Nick's.

You are waaaaay far in the wrong thread. These are almost certainly from a more SW&D oriented brand and not from a workwear brand. However you could probably imitate them with a black smooth leather on a six inch boot with one of the black vibram christy soles and blackout stitching/hardware. I'm sure White's or Nicks could give you something similar.

So are Nick's "Contender" line of boots with the McKay stitching of lower quality than their Welted boots? The descriptions of the two processes that have been lifted from their site are useful. But in comparing the McKay v. Welted boots, anyone care to comment on the bottom line in terms of durability, ease/cost of sole replacement, etc. ?

So after finding this thread and some of these photos/drawings, it's helping clear up the small niche of construction style that Nick's, White's, Viberg, and Wesco use. The illustration above seems to leave out the final outsole. As I understand it, Viberg is simply using the same method without the welt. Is that everyone else's understanding? Nick's and White's construction are apparently categorized as "Rolled Welt" construction, but that wouldn't be an appropriate term for Viberg or Wesco since they leave out the welt and simply stitch the vamp to the midsole. Any other companies that use this type of construction?
