Raising collar band on shirt?

I just asked my tailor to take off just the collar band on my shirt (#3 and 4 on the image below) and increase it from 1'' high to 1 3/4''. I had a nice cutaway collar I liked but I wanted the more formal appearance of it being higher up on my skinny, long neck. However, I'm wondering if by raising the band 3/4'', then the 'point length' (# 2 on the image) will not be long enough anymore and the 'points' themselves ( # 1 on the image) won't touch the shirt breast below ... they will instead be raised up off the shirt 3/4''. Can anyone tell me if this is the unfortunate result? My other thought is that the points WILL still touch the shirt, just the cutaway ( length 6 on the image) will be reduced. If anyone knows what will happen by raising the collar band, let me know so I can tell the tailor to adjust accordingly.

My goal is to get a collar that looks like the Prince of Kent below, (thought without that huge tie knot)

Your tailor will have to make you a new collar. If the band 4 is raised, the part of the collar that folds down behind 4 will be too short.

That's what I worried about, but the visible collar itself is already longer than the collar band on this specific shirt, so I'm hoping a combination of that and my jacket riding over that back part of my neck will make it look OK. Making a new collar isn't an option considering I couldn't find a matching fabric.

You can't really raise the collar on an existing shirt without having it replaced with a new one. I'd just save my self the trouble and buy a new shirt in the style i'm looking for then to try and have my other shirts alterted to my liking.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
