Dictators usually have a great, distinctive style. Of course, it is not "classic" but for all purposes, their look is ostentatious and appropriate. It's the democratic nations that have the stylistically dull leaders, save perhaps for FDR and Truman.

Here's a pretty pair...though I have always had a soft spot for Castro, just the military green thing gets old fast.

Dictators and more specifically, totalitarian ones, must rock the personality cult.

Peter York, a very savvy cultural observer, penned a book on dictatorial style last year or so.

It seems many strongmen and dictators, such as Noriega, Schwarzenegger and Bokassa, favored Berluti.

I always thought Stroessner's uniform was well-done. Not over-the-top like many dictators' uniforms.

I have the York book. I was somewhat disappointed because some of the sections offered very few photos; I would have liked to have seen more of the homes of dictators.
