Straightening bootcut jeans

Hi guys,

I scored a great pair of Diesel Tyel jeans for $99 CDN (90 US). Around here, Diesel jeans go for around $330, so I'm quite pleased.

However, they are far too long in the leg, and they are extremely wide at the bottom.

Given that I don't like how wide they are at the bottom, and seeing I'm going to get them hemmed anyway, I wondered if it is possible to straighten the jeans from the knee down without them looking odd.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this?

Any good tailor could do that for you and make it look good.

Yes, I have a pair of Nudie Flare Glenns and AG Fillmores both taken in at the hem and they look great. But make sure you take them to a decent tailor because once they are altered there is no going back.

Yep, it should be easy. I've had it done and it worked quite well.

I have a pair of Fillmores I've been thinking of doing the same with. How much did you take off the opening? Any pics? Just wondering how much to shave off.

To be honest, I can't remember what width they were originally, but currently they are exactly 8.25 inches wide at the hem. I think I gav my tailor a pair of Ernest Sewn Filsons and asked him to use them as a guide.

As you can see, they still appear slightly bootcut, which I prefer personally, especially since the AG denim is soft and seems to drape against the leg, so they wear a tad narrower than they are:

I can't exactly recall, but my guy usually charges me $10-$20 for restructuring jeans, depending on the amount of work involvled. But I give him so much business that I think he usually charges me less in general. I would guess that on average, altering the Fillmores would run about $20, give or take depending on the tailor.

Crap, that's exactly how I want them. They really look great. The softness of the denim was one of the reasons I bought them to begin with and I liked the look but just thought the flares were a bit over done. Seriously, one huge thank you for posting up those pics so fast. Now I'll just have to wait till Dec to bring them over to my tailor in hollywood. This dude's great and only charged me $5 to alter the length on another pair of mine.

I think the problem you are more likely to run into will be caused by Diesel's signature extreme distressing. If the legs are way too long for you, aren't the knees (where their fading usually abruptly ends) going to be down by your ankles?

That could happen but I don't think we're really shopping off length here, just slimming down the size if the leg opening.

Ah, sorry. Thought you were referring to what nastyandy did to his pair and what I'd like to do to mine.

Yes, I'm in total agreement with you. Knee-fading would be off and it'd look like you've spent a lot of time on your tibias.

The leg on them is 34, but I only take a 32. So, I guess I was exaggerating when I said they are way too long... there is just so much material with the bootcut that it seems worse than it is.

They don't have any distressing (which I prefer).
