    Everything jmr said, and in addition hard wearing, ingress of water, etc can make the glue connecting the canvas gemming to the insole fail as well.     I believe the implication is that you can reorder the same fabric, but with updated measurements, with that $40 credit. Always had issues resolved satisfactorily via email, and it's typically pretty generous (as this is)
